I have lived in five different countries over the past 15 years. And, though now back in the UK, my family’s immigration journey continues even here.

I’ve experienced the success and the struggles; the doubt and the unwavering trust in my instincts. I understand and empathize.

And, more than anything else, I look forward to creating this supportive community for all of you.

Soon, as the centerpiece of First Generation, we will launch a live community, where you will be able to ask, answer, discuss, debate, and discover all things U.S. Business Visa related - and beyond.

Business immigration is not only bureaucracy, but belief. Though some steps are tangible, others are less so. It’s a lot about change and even more about challenge.

Within our live community, you’ll be able to connect with both peers and professionals. And us, of course (we sit somewhere between the two).

You can receive quick answers to any questions or concerns you may have and, more so than anything else, benefit from the supportive guiding arm of companionship.

Within Community, events mean moments of time together - whether digitally or in-person.

Time we put aside to collaboratively focus on something specific.

This can be a presentation, talk, webinar, roundtable, fireside chat, Q&A session, social, or - and it is planned for 2024 - a Business Immigration Summit.

As we grow, we also have half an eye on local chapters, where members themselves can be supported in arranging group meetups and events. If this is something that appeals, don’t hesitate to let us know (yours could be the first).

Learning will be a key component of the First Generation Community from day one, with both this Newsletter and our Resource Center providing stacks of useful insight and information.

This will evolve over time, however, to provide you with a more structured learning approach through courses and academy.

You will partially dictate the content of these courses, as the topics you contribute to, engage with, and request will form the basis of our strategy here.

The Future Thinkers

The Future Thinkers is a semi-autobiographical story of my own experiences as an immigrant/nomad/global citizen.

My first real venture out of the comfort of England was a four-month overland expedition down to South Africa. This then followed stints in Ethiopia, the UAE, Luxembourg, Romania, and finally back to the UK.

A journey that started alone now sees me accompanied by my wife and three children. Our immigration story continues even here and I have plenty of learnings to share.

Chapter 1.0

Eyes to the Horizon

My catalyst was self-preservation.

I could see that, one day, everyone was going to move on - after all, London wasn’t a city for raising a family. And I didn’t want to be the one who got left behind.

My “why now?” came from the perception that taking the plunge by choice would be preferable to having to cope with the inevitable once it happened.

Now, I don’t necessarily advise everyone to be driven by fear, but there is a certain foresight that tends to empower those with a visionary mentality.

In fact, and this is partly what makes business and immigration such a brutal combination, an appropriate amount of bubbling anxiety is almost an absolute prerequisite for a sound business mind.

And this too is why community is so crucial in this context - there’s a fine line between beneficial awareness and destructive fear. And it’s peers and people that can help to keep you on the right side.

But, I digress - back to my first leap of faith.

I’d had this bubbling obsession with an overland expedition for years. I even had a map with pins and string on my wall, illustrating the route - from London, UK, down to Johannesburg, South Africa.

It was more than just a journey; more of a voyage and a project. It was an exploration through humanity as much as landscape. And, I already sensed that it would somehow continue beyond the conclusion of that expedition.

Indeed, this adventure was akin to leaping into an ice cold bath to kickstart your day. It abruptly removed any lingering doubt about my capacity to survive outside my comfort zone, my home country, my motherland. And opened up a world of opportunity.

First, France felt like a milestone and then Europe was done; Syria was a struggle, but we made it.

North Africa was going through turmoil and the east coast penetrated our souls and laid the foundations for becoming my future adoptive home.

The south was rich with wildlife, energy, and brutal, oh-to-recent history.

Each step along the way was sprinkled with beauty, trust, and hospitality; while struggle, suffering, and unsurmountable pain were never far away.

Once complete. I rested, briefly. And then turned back northwards to return to my new home in Ethiopia.

E2 Phone Find Home

January 2024 was all about the E-2 for us here at Joorney.

While growth was positive across the board, we did a record number of E-2 business plans - an incredible 65% increase year-on-year!!

The E-2 visa is popular due to its flexibility, relatively low investment requirement, and the ability to renew indefinitely as long as the business remains viable.
